Edward P. Monte, Ph.D.

 

Edward P. Monte, Ph.D. has for the past 35 years developed a respected and successful consultation practice to family businesses and family offices that specifically concentrates on parent adult child relationship issues that impact family business endeavors. A particular focus in his consulting, research and writing is the complex dynamics between fathers and sons in business together.

Edward is a member of the Family Firm Institute and regularly presents in business schools, family forums, accounting, law, and financial advisory firms throughout the country. He is a highly experienced workshop leader presenting locally, nationally, and internationally.

For the past 30 years, he has taught primarily in the Next Generation Leadership Institute within the Family Business Center at the Quinlan School of Business at Loyola University Chicago. He also serves as the Clinical Fellow for this program and, in 2019, was instated as an Adjunct Professor in the business school itself. He is presently also the co-director of their Legacy Institute working with family business founders and stewards around end of career and succession issues.

In addition, Edward delivers individual executive coaching with a focus on personal and interpersonal issues such as life cycle stages and gender issues which impact career development, leadership, motivation, and organizational dynamics. Edward also joined Keyt Consulting in Chicago, Illinois as an associate consultant in 2017.

Until the end of 2015, Edward was a practicing psychotherapist, with a career spanning over 40 years, specializing in couple and family therapy. Over twenty-five years ago, he founded Centra, p.c. a multi-disciplinary psychotherapy and psychiatric practice group with offices in Philadelphia and New Jersey. During his tenure with this collective, Edward served as Clinical Director. Prior to the founding of Centra, p.c., he was a senior staff clinician and supervisor in a clinic within the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He also served as the Program Chair of the Couple and Family Therapy Program at Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Philadelphia for three years.

For over twenty years, and up to 2016, Edward was an instructor of graduate education at the University of Pennsylvania teaching in the Department of Psychiatry in the School of Medicine as well as the School of Social Policy and Practice. For five years, he was on the teaching faculty in the doctoral program in Couple and Family Therapy at Drexel University in Philadelphia and a recurring lecturer at the London Marriage Guidance Council in London, England for six years. Dr. Monte is a retired clinical member and approved supervisor with the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).

Seven years ago, Edward left Centra, P.C. and moved home to New Mexico where he grew up. He moved his consulting practice formerly, Family Solutions Group – to Santa Fe where he now lives. He is presently on the board of the Parker Center for Family Business in the Anderson School of Management at the University of New Mexico. He heads the Next Generation Leadership Group at the Parker Center and also teaches the Family Business course at the Anderson School.

Most importantly for his work as a family business consultant, Edward was raised as a third-generation son in a family business. His family has run over seven family businesses in New Mexico since 1900 when they immigrated from Italy.
